Compassionate Focussed Therapy (CFT)
Compassionate Focussed Therapy (CFT) teaches people how to feel compassionate about themselves and others. For many people, feeling kind towards oneself seems alien. “I’m no good.” “I don’t deserve to feel happy.” These are common thoughts. CFT helps people to understand and accept their own value.
Equally, feeling so guilty about the distress we sometimes feel is a common experience. CFT teaches that this is a natural result of how we and our brains have evolved. Clients are helped to investigate how early experiences may have triggered these distressing thoughts, and that these feelings and fears are not actually their fault.
The client is taught how to redirect these thoughts along kinder lines, focussing, for example, on achievements; and to practise feelings and thoughts that are supportive, kind and encouraging.
