Reflexology

Reflexology is a form of ‘alternative’ or ‘complementary’ medicine which involves massaging the feet or hands. Reflexologists believe that all organs, systems and glands of the body can be mapped onto areas of the feet called reflex points, with the left foot matching the left side of the body, and the right foot matching the right side of the body. Most commonly, the feet are used as the areas to be treated.

Different touches and different ways of massaging the points on the feet may be used throughout the treatment. Being ticklish is not a problem as the pressure is firm but gentle. Most patients find this deeply relaxing.

The whole body may be worked in this way, and reflexology aims to treat the whole body, mind and spirit, rather than isolated symptoms. For instance, if you are suffering from stress, your body may be affected as well as your mind. Similarly, a physical illness can be emotionally draining. By a careful and systematic coverage of the whole foot or hand, the reflexologist aims to rebalance the body, and treat the whole of your being.

Maternity Reflexology

Maternity Reflexology is a form of reflexology specially modified to support a natural event – conception, pregnancy, birth and post-partum issues.

Vertical Reflex Therapy (VRT)

Vertical Reflex Therapy is a series of modifications on a usual reflexology session – vertical, because you are standing for this part of the session, providing an intensive level of treatment.

The History of Reflexology

It is an ancient therapy, used by the Chinese and the Egyptians. It was developed again at the beginning of the 20th century by Dr William Fitzgerald, and further refined by Eunice Ingham, who mapped out the different areas of the feet and hands to match the internal organs and systems of the body.
